Spending a day off the mountain provides incredible insight into the behind-the-scenes goings on in the lodge. Daily, we see first-hand the ability of our guides and drivers to get us about the mountain and home safely all the while finding great lines and epic snow. Starting in no particular order, I want to sing the praises of the folks at Selkirk Snowcat Skiing who make all the off-mountain magic happen.
In the office, Marlaine – our very own Radar O’Reilly, works tirelessly and to ensure every detail of each guest’s visit is looked after to the nth degree. Katie and Clint tinker away on a wide variety of machinery not just restricted to snowcats and snowmobiles. Anything powered by an electrical current or internal combustion engine demands their attention daily – from our micro-hydro plant, generators, dishwashers, hot tub, sauna, washers, dryers, fridges, ovens, freezers, temperamental ice makers, to the all important espresso machine.
It never ceases to amaze me that each week, our kitchen works their magic producing three fantastic and creative gourmet meals and an apres ski appetizer each and every day of our season. It blows my mind that Melissa, Claude, Aquila and their team of kitchen elves can plan, order, organize and prepare such original, healthy and delicious meals, and even more amazing – manage to deliver them unfailingly at our remote wilderness lodge.
Our caretakers – aka the “Floaters with the Motors” take care of everything not done by someone else. From ensuring the sauna is just the right temperature, stacking firewood, cleaning the hot tub to keeping the sled fleet fuelled. And when called, sledding up the mountain to retrieve a tired guest or deliver a replacement pair of skis.
Our housekeepers have some of the toughest jobs in the lodge, yet perform them with great care and aplomb. From the “just-in-case” flashlights and earplugs that adorn your bedside tables to the tender way your clothing is neatly folded. Ever wonder how that extra pillow arrived on your bed? Maybe you asked for one last year and Mel and Rachel remembered.
This flurry of activity takes place each day while our guests are out on the mountain. These are the unsung heroes who contribute so much to the success of your trip to Selkirk Snowcat Skiing.
