Visitors from all over the world come to Selkirk Snowcat Skiing to get a taste of our Kootenay “cold smoke”. What they don’t see is what goes into creating the “ultimate wilderness ski experience”. Behind the smiles and the faceshots, safety is always our primary objective. This year, Operations Manager Kevin Marr assembled the most comprehensive Guide Training Week ever.
Workshops focused on avalanche rescue practices, rescue toboggan use and operation, weather equipment use and maintenance, explosives use and procedures for avalanche control and slope protection, rental ski binding certification, and terrain familiarization and slope management.
Our guides were stoked to participate in field exercises from some of the best in their field:
- Dr Linda Johannson – trauma first aid and life saving procedures
- Dr Bruce Jamieson – World renowned avalanche research scientist
- Bruce Gardave – Heli rescue technician
- Kevin Maloney – Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure avalanche technician
As we enter our 42nd season, we prepare as though it were our first. Guests trust us to show them a good time, but above all, keep them safe. We seek every opportunity to learn new safety practices and hope that we never have to use them.
